How to repair
my meter box
If your meter box door has fallen off, is hanging loose, or is currently held on with tape the damage may be repairable without replacing the whole cabinet. Here's how to assess it and fix it.
Is your meter box repairable?
The door is still present, the cabinet body is mostly intact, the damage is around the hinge area, and the door can still line up with the opening.
The door is missing entirely, the cabinet is badly cracked, the meter or supply equipment is damaged, or there is no secure fixing area remaining.
Safety note: never interfere with the meter, wiring, pipework, seals or regulator. This guide only relates to the external cabinet door and hinge area.
Temporary fixes are not repairs
Many homeowners use gaffer tape, cable ties or wire loops to stop a meter box door blowing open. These can help briefly, but they're not a long-term fix adhesive weakens outdoors, tape looks poor, and the door usually comes loose again within weeks.
The MeterBoxFix hinge is designed to create a new working hinge point where the original hinge has failed a proper, permanent repair.
How to fit the repair hinge
- Position the hinge across the door and frame, spanning the old hinge area.
- Select the best fixing holes choose positions that avoid any damaged or missing original mounting points.
- Pre-drill small pilot holes at your chosen positions.
- Secure with the included self-tapping screws no special tools needed.
- Close the door check it opens and closes smoothly.
Tip: if the door is particularly heavy or both original hinges have failed, consider fitting two repair hinges one at the top and one at the bottom for a more secure result.
